Abuja, Nigeria – June 3, 2026- Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has raised serious red flags over a shocking breach of the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) voter database.

He is demanding an independent and transparent investigation into the unauthorised release of Nollywood actor Emeka Ike’s personal voter registration details.

The controversy erupted after Lere Olayinka, media aide to Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, shared sensitive screenshots on X.

The images revealed Ike’s voter transfer from Imo State to the FCT, including his application number, Voter Identification Number, registration centre, profile picture, and other private information pulled directly from INEC’s restricted administrative portal.

Olayinka posted the data while questioning the actor’s eligibility to contest a House of Representatives seat in Abuja following his recent political activities.

Atiku, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), did not mince words.

He warned that the incident threatens the credibility of the entire 2027 electoral process.

“INEC has now admitted that the information originated from its restricted voter registration database and was accessed using valid official credentials,” Atiku stated through his spokesperson.

He stressed that the data did not come from a whistleblower or investigative journalist but was “publicly released by Mr. Lere Olayinka, spokesman to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.”

This breach has triggered widespread outrage.

Nigerians worry that if a prominent actor’s data can be leaked so easily, the private records of over 90 million registered voters may be equally vulnerable to manipulation, political harassment, or even identity theft.

Emeka Ike himself has threatened legal action, describing the exposure as a serious violation of his privacy and vowing to take Olayinka on.

INEC and DSS Swing into Action

INEC has responded by launching an internal probe.

The commission’s audit trail reportedly identified the specific user account involved, ruling out external hacking while confirming unauthorised use of staff credentials.

The Department of State Services (DSS) has also joined the investigation.

However, Atiku insists that INEC’s explanation raises more questions than answers.

He called for full disclosure of the chain of custody and demanded accountability to restore public confidence.

Many analysts agree that this episode exposes deeper weaknesses in INEC’s data protection systems, especially with the 2027 elections approaching and continuous voter registration still ongoing.

The timing adds political fuel to the fire.

The leak occurred shortly after Ike announced his political ambition and amid ongoing tensions within opposition circles.

Critics see it as an attempt to intimidate or discredit potential challengers, while others view it as a symptom of a larger culture of impunity where powerful figures can access restricted information for political gain.

Broader Implications for Electoral Integrity

This scandal arrives at a delicate moment. Public trust in INEC remains fragile after previous elections marred by controversies.

Data privacy experts warn that such breaches could violate Nigeria’s Data Protection Act and Cybercrime Act.

If left unresolved, the incident risks eroding voter confidence and giving ammunition to those who already doubt the fairness of future polls.

As investigations continue, Nigerians are watching closely. Will those responsible face real consequences, or will this become another case swept under the carpet?

Atiku’s demand for transparency reflects a growing national anxiety: if the electoral umpire’s database is not secure, how can citizens trust the democratic process itself?

The coming days may prove decisive. A thorough, fearless probe could help rebuild faith.

Anything less may deepen suspicions and further polarise the already heated political landscape ahead of 2027.
