Warri, Delta State — May 27, 2026 — In a move that has sent ripples across Nigeria’s political landscape, former Deputy Senate President Senator Ovie Omo-Agege has officially resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The seasoned politician announced his exit in a resignation letter dated May 22, 2026, addressed to the APC Chairman of Orogun Ward 2 in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State. The decision, he said, takes immediate effect.

In straightforward and firm words, Omo-Agege explained: “I will not remain a sitting duck in a party where I cannot advance the interests of Delta Central, Delta State, and Nigeria.”

He added that after careful review of recent events in the Delta APC and wide consultations with his supporters and political allies, it was clear his goals — and those of the people he represents — would be better served elsewhere.

The resignation comes just days after Omo-Agege lost the APC senatorial primary for Delta Central to incumbent Senator Ede Dafinone on May 18. Official results gave Dafinone a landslide victory, but Omo-Agege’s team strongly rejected the figures, claiming their own collation showed him winning overwhelmingly.

This latest development marks a significant chapter for the Urhobo leader, who has long been a major force in Delta politics. Many see his exit as a blow to the APC in the state, especially with 2027 elections on the horizon.

Social media has been buzzing since the news broke. While some supporters expressed disappointment and called it a “political miscalculation,” others welcomed the move, predicting more high-profile defections from the APC ahead of the next general elections. Speculation is already growing about his next destination — with many pointing toward the New Democratic Congress (NDC) or other opposition platforms.

Senator Obarisi Ovie Omo-Agege, CFR — also known as the Obarisi of Urhoboland — is a lawyer and respected traditional chief. He represented Delta Central in the Senate from 2015 to 2023 and served as Deputy President of the 9th Senate. Originally from the Labour Party, he joined the APC in 2017 and played a key role in strengthening the party’s structure in Delta State. He was the APC’s governorship candidate in 2023.

In his letter, Omo-Agege thanked the APC for the opportunity to serve at the highest level and requested that his name be removed from all party records. He wished the party well.

As political realignments heat up across the country, all eyes are now on Omo-Agege’s next move and how it will reshape the opposition landscape in Delta State.
